SOME KNOWN SIDE EFFECTS OF COMMON BIRTH CONTROLS:
*these are generalized but side effects are specific to certain forms of birth control
- Weight gain
- Constant Cramping
- Nausea
- Decreased Libido
- Mood Instability/Depression
- Infertility
- Hypertension, stroke, blood clots

Before mentioning some of the common mechanisms of birth control methods used today, let us reflect on the beauty of when life begins.

MECHANISMS OF SOME COMMON CONTRACEPTIVES USED TODAY:
Suppression of ovulation (aka the egg is not released from the ovary, preventing conception)
For example, the primary mechanism of a combination birth control pill (not the “mini pill”)
* Potential for breakthrough ovulation (ovulation occurs anyways)
Changes made to cervical mucus (aka “the slippery stuff” that sperm need in order to survive in a woman's body...also needed for fertilization/conception)
It thickens cervical mucus making unfavorable conditions for sperm travel
*Potential for adequate cervical mucus for fertilization/conception
Alters uterine lining
Thins the uterine lining making it hostile for the implantation of new life conceived (ABORTIFACIENT ) if there is failure in the other mechanisms.
* Note, depending on if ovulation occured or not, bleeding is seen as a period or withdraw bleeding (not a period)
Copper release
Spermicidal (impaired viability of sperm) acting to prevent fertilization/conception
Increases inflammatory response of uterine wall
*while unlikely, fertilization/conception potential still remains
Inflammation to uterine lining
Inflammatory Response (after all an IUD is a foreign body)
*Applies to all IUD’s
It is a fact that many commonly used contraceptives have an abortifacient potential but this is not frequently discussed or routinely known.
